COLOMBO (News 1st) - A high-level discussion to accelerate the implementation of the Galle City Development Project under the Major Urban Development Programme was held at the Presidential Secretariat under the chairmanship of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The meeting reviewed progress in transforming Galle, a World Heritage city, into a leading cultural and tourist destination, while addressing challenges hindering the project's implementation.
Special attention was given to acquiring land for the relocation of key public institutions currently located in the city centre, including the police station, post office, prison and nursing training school.
Discussions also focused on attracting investment, securing funding for new initiatives, and establishing a central administrative complex to improve public access to government services.
The President stressed the importance of a comprehensive urban development strategy and close coordination among state institutions, highlighting the Urban Development Authority's key role in ensuring the successful implementation of the project.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary of the Southern Province Chandima C. Muhandiramge, Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage, Members of Parliament Nishantha Perera, T. K. Jayasundara, Nishantha Samaraweera among others.
