A long-standing issue of access to clean drinking water faced by students of Medirigiriya Diggalpura Primary School in Polonnaruwa has been resolved with the inauguration of a newly constructed water filtration system.
The school, which has around 200 students, along with the surrounding Diggalpura village, had struggled for years without a reliable source of safe drinking water.
As part of the “Gammadda” initiative, the water purification system was officially opened today, coinciding with Sirasa TV’s 28th anniversary celebrations.
The project was implemented under Gammadda after identifying the urgent need of the school community, turning a long-standing request into reality.
Although a small water filter had previously been donated to the school, it later became non-functional. Since then, students and staff had been relying on water drawn from a well using a motor pump, but the supply was unsuitable for drinking.
Residents of the area had also been forced to travel nearly five kilometers to access a proper water purification facility.
The newly inaugurated system was ceremonially handed over to the students this morning, marking the end of a years-long struggle for access to safe drinking water.
The event was attended by Group Director of Capital Maharaja Group and Gammadda Leader Chevaan Daniel, MTV Chief Executive Officer Yasarath Kamalsiri, project donor Mandrie Amarasinghe of Borella, Medirigiriya Divisional Secretary Bathiya Wijayanta, News1st Channel Head Suranga Senanayake, Sirasa TV Religious Programs Director Dharmasri Bandara, along with several others.
