COLOMBO (News 1st); Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara outlined in Parliament the measures taken by the government to enhance the welfare of war heroes.

Speaking in the House, Major General (Retired) Aruna Jayasekara emphasised that the government’s primary responsibility is to prevent the recurrence of war and avoid the emergence of divisive conditions within the country.

He stated that these efforts are being carried out by placing reconciliation at the forefront, without discrimination based on race, religion, or caste, and ensuring unity among all Sri Lankans.

He further noted that a significant number of retired war heroes and police personnel are currently employed in the private security sector. In response, the government plans to establish a special regulatory authority within this year to oversee the sector.

Jayasekara also highlighted proposed amendments to pension schemes under special welfare initiatives.

He stated that, with Cabinet approval, steps have been taken to present amendments to the widows’ and orphans’ pension scheme. These changes aim to extend benefits to the families, children, or close relatives of unmarried personnel who were injured due to terrorist activities and subsequently retired on medical grounds, as well as those who married after retirement.

In addition, he said that measures are being taken to amend the law to ensure that widows’ and orphans’ pension benefits are extended to the close relatives of individuals who have legally divorced and remarried before reaching the age of 55.
