COLOMBO (News 1st) - The low-pressure area located to the northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist, increasing the risk of flooding due to ongoing heavy rainfall.
In an advisory issued by The Department of Meteorology stated that the system is expected to gradually weaken and move away from Sri Lanka within the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued Level 2 landslide warnings for 11 districts across the island.
One death was reported yesterday from Batticaloa due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions.
As of yesterday, 203 people from 62 families had been affected by the adverse weather conditions.
The Disaster Management Centre also reported partial damage to 39 houses.
Due to the influence of the low-pressure system over the island, showery conditions are expected to continue for the next two days.
Strong winds and rainy conditions around the island are also expected to persist over the coming days.
The Department of Meteorology urged the public, including fishing and naval communities, to pay close attention to future weather forecasts and advisories issued regarding the situation.
In addition, the Department of Irrigation stated that by yesterday evening, 18 major reservoirs and 18 medium-scale reservoirs were spilling over due to the continuing rainfall.
Significant rainfall received in the upper catchment areas of several rivers caused water levels in the Kalu, Nilwala, and Gin rivers, as well as the Attanagalu Oya, to remain at high levels as of yesterday evening (13th).
