COLOMBO (News 1st) - The police have announced that the inquest report regarding the death of Ranga Rajapaksa, the suspended Acting Director of the Department of External Resources at the Ministry of Finance, will be submitted to the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate's Court on 25th of May.

According to preliminary findings from the post-mortem examination, police stated that the death of Ranga Rajapakse could be a suicide.

Ranga Rajapaksa was found dead in the garden of his residence in Kuliyapitiya while under suspension. 

His suspension was linked to an investigation into the cyber-theft of $2.5 million from the General Treasury.

Following his death, two police teams led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) were appointed to conduct a formal investigation.

The Ministry of Health appointed a special board consisting of four expert judicial medical officers to perform the autopsy.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Rajapaksa had gone to the back of his garden around 10:00 AM last Friday and his body was discovered later that afternoon around 2:00 PM.

Police noted a deep laceration on one of his legs.

Prior to his death, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had recorded statements from Rajapaksa on three separate occasions regarding the treasury theft. 

One statement was taken while he was in active service, while the other two were recorded following his interdiction.

Furthermore, a foreign travel ban had been imposed on him by the court following the submission of initial investigative reports. 

Ranga Rajapaksa, aged 50, was a father of two.
