COLOMBO (News 1st); President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, will undertake a state visit to Sri Lanka from May 3 to May 5 at the invitation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The visit is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, with several Memoranda of Understanding set to be signed covering cooperation in a range of key sectors. The Cabinet of Sri Lanka has already granted approval for the signing of these agreements.
Among the proposed agreements is a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Defence and National Service of the Maldives and the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University of Sri Lanka, focusing on training programmes, staff exchanges and joint research initiatives.
Another agreement will be signed between the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development of the Maldives and the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Training of Sri Lanka to enhance cooperation in the training of teachers and school leaders.
A separate Memorandum of Understanding is planned between the Maldives Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare and the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, aimed at strengthening collaboration in the health sector.
The two countries are also set to sign an MoU on cooperation in the tourism sector, reflecting the importance of tourism to both economies.
In addition, an agreement will be entered into between the National Archives of Maldives and the Department of National Archives of Sri Lanka to promote cooperation in archival management and preservation.
Another Memorandum of Understanding will focus on sports and youth development, to be signed between the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness of the Maldives and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Sri Lanka.
The state visit is expected to mark a significant step forward in expanding cooperation and deepening ties between Sri Lanka and the Maldives across multiple sectors.
