COLOMBO (News 1st); Member of Parliament Ramanathan Archchuna has been remanded until the 29th by the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court.
The parliamentarian was arrested by officers of the Ilavalai Police in Jaffna following an investigation into an alleged incident involving criminal intimidation.
Acting Police Spokesman, Police Superintendent Minura Senaratne, stated that the MP was arrested under the Firearms Ordinance on charges of criminal intimidation and verbal threats.
Police said the arrest was made this (27) morning when Ramanathan Archchuna arrived at the Ilavalai Police Station to provide a statement regarding an incident in which a woman was allegedly threatened by pointing a firearm at her.
A video circulating on social media shows the parliamentarian allegedly threatening a woman with a firearm during a dispute related to a land issue.
Based on a complaint lodged by the woman at the Ilavalai Police Station, investigations were initiated, leading to the arrest of the MP.
He was subsequently produced before the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court, which ordered that he be remanded until the 29th.
