Buddhist Monks Arrive in Sri Lanka Ahead of Historic Walk For Peace

COLOMBO (News 1st); An international Walk For Peace aimed at spreading the message of non‑violence around the world is scheduled to commence in Sri Lanka on April 22.

In preparation for the event, several Buddhist monks arrived in Sri Lanka early this morning to take part in thewalk.

A group of twelve monks, led by Venerable Pannakara Thero, who previously provided leadership to Walk For Peace in the United States of America, is scheduled to participate in the walk to be held in Sri Lanka.

Among them, several monks arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake at around 5.30 a.m. today.

Following a long journey, the monks are expected to spend the coming days making initial preparations for this special peace pilgrimage.

The Walk For Peace will be led by Venerable Pannakara Thero.

Adding a deeply touching dimension to this special event is the confirmed arrival of Aloka, the much-loved canine who has won hearts across borders, who will be travelling to Sri Lanka to take part in the march.

The Walk For Peace will officially begin on April 22, after receiving blessings from the Sacred Sri Maha Bodhi in the ancient city of Anuradhapura.

A sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi, obtained with the blessings of the Atamasthanadhipathi Theros and the Maha Sangha, is also scheduled to be carried during the pwalk, symbolizing peace, compassion, and spiritual continuity.

The initiative is being organized with state patronage following discussions at the Presidential Secretariat, chaired by Ven. Dr. Melpitiye Wimalakitthi Thero, while the Maharaja Media Network has been appointed the Official Media and Coordination Partner for the Sri Lankan chapter of the pilgrimage.
