COLOMBO (News 1st): Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake has issued a nationwide advisory urging all passengers to wear seatbelts at all times.

The Minister emphasized that strict adherence to seatbelt safety is critical to minimizing injuries and saving lives during road accidents.

He expressed deep concern over a sharp rise in road fatalities, noting that 49 people died in accidents between April 4 and April 10 alone.

He highlighted that while the daily average is typically five to six deaths, this recent spike is a tragic and "unbearable" burden for the nation.

In an urgent plea to the public during the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year season, the Minister emphasized the critical importance of seatbelt safety for all passengers.

He specifically urged those in the back seats to buckle up, pointing out that rear-seat passengers often suffer the most severe injuries because they frequently neglect this safety measure.

He concluded by asking citizens to prioritize their lives and ensure that the festive season is not marred by preventable transportation tragedies.
