COLOMBO (News 1st); Iran has assured Sri Lanka of its full support in the event of an energy or oil shortage, with Tehran pledging to provide oil and other essential supplies if the island nation faces disruptions due to escalating regional tensions.

The assurance was given by Dr. Alireza Delkosh, Ambassador of Iran to Sri Lanka, in response to concerns over Sri Lanka’s energy security should the current geopolitical situation worsen.

Sri Lanka, which depends heavily on imported fuel for power generation and transportation, could face significant challenges in securing oil supplies if global supply routes are disrupted or shortages emerge.

Responding to questions about whether Iran would step in to assist Sri Lanka under such circumstances, Ambassador Delkosh said Iran’s position was clear and unequivocal.

“Definitely your answer is yes,” he said. “Sri Lanka is our friend country. As I told you, Hormuz trade is not closed to our friend countries’ vessels. Because of that, Iran always is ready to provide all necessities of friendly countries like Sri Lanka.”

He emphasized that Iran remains prepared to supply oil and other essential goods if Sri Lanka makes a formal request, underlining Tehran’s commitment to supporting Colombo during times of difficulty.

“In any case, if Sri Lanka demands oil or any other necessary goods, Iran will supply and provide these goods to Sri Lanka,” the ambassador said. “We don’t want to see Sri Lanka in trouble, and the nation of Sri Lanka is very esteemed and respected by Iran.”
