COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka’s Navy has made a major breakthrough in combating drug and weapons smuggling in the southern seas.

During a special operation conducted the day before yesterday, the Navy seized a multi-day fishing trawler transporting illicit substances. A second fishing vessel, which had arrived to assist the first, was also intercepted and taken into custody.

Ten suspects were arrested in connection with these two vessels. The Navy has brought 48 bags of narcotics to the Dikowita Harbour, which include significant quantities of heroin and crystal meth, commonly known as ‘ICE’.

In addition to the drugs, authorities recovered a cache of weapons from the primary vessel. This included two T-56 assault rifles, an M-16 rifle, and eight pistols.

The arrested suspects, along with the seized narcotics and weapons, will be handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau for further investigation. The Navy also confirmed that this is the largest haul of narcotics recorded in the country so far this year.
