Railway Strike Called Off: Services to Continue As Usual Today

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Train drivers have decided to call off the strikes which was launched at midnight yesterday. 

The strike was launched protesting against the decision to recruit a group of security forces personnel for driver training, in addition to those already selected through the competitive examination process.

The midnight stirike was called by the Locomotive Operating Engineers' Union and the Locomotive Officers' Association.

However the strike was called off following a late-night press conference held by the Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways.

Accordingly, during the press conference, it was announced that the government has officially suspended the decision to provide driver training to 20 Army personnel.

Following this the trade unions decided to call off the strike and return to work.
