Former Sathosa Deputy GM Arrested Over Massive Garlic Deal Scam

COLOMBO (News 1st); A former Deputy General Manager of Lanka Sathosa Limited and two businessmen have been taken into custody by a team of officers from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

Their arrests were made following an investigation launched on information received by the Bribery Commission.

According to the investigation, the former Deputy General Manager had knowingly acted in violation of existing regulations and approved the sale of 54,860 kilograms of garlic to a private businessman at a rate of Rs. 135 per kilogram, despite being aware that the transaction would cause financial loss to the Sathosa institution.

As a result of this decision, the state is alleged to have incurred a loss exceeding Rs. 17 million.

The suspects were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and were subsequently released on bail.
