Sri Lanka Ready to 'Punch Above Its Weight,' says Turkiye Envoy

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka has the potential to emerge as a high-performing nation in the global arena by focusing on innovation and sectors where it holds a natural edge, the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Sri Lanka, Semih Lütfü Turgut, said.

Ambassador Turgut drew parallels from global history, noting that many of the world’s most remarkable success stories come from countries that “punch above their weight” by strategically leveraging their comparative advantages.

“Innovation is the multiplier. It allows small nations to amplify their strengths,” he said, adding that Sri Lanka’s strategic geographic location, rich cultural heritage, and growing entrepreneurial energy place it in a strong position to craft its own breakthrough growth story.

He emphasised that global commerce is not a zero‑sum contest.

“Commerce is not a boxing ring, but if it were, small countries have shown they can land powerful punches,” he noted. “And unlike boxing, in trade we all win when we play to our strengths.”

Drawing from Türkiye’s own development experience, Ambassador Turgut said the country stands as proof that economic success comes not only from geographical advantage, but from “determination, creativity and partnerships.”

He expressed confidence that Sri Lanka will continue to rise in areas where it excels, while strengthening bilateral cooperation.
