COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is preparing to introduce sweeping reforms to its public transport sector, with Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake announcing a major crackdown on drivers and conductors found working under the influence of drugs.
The Minister said the government is expanding drug‑testing mechanisms across the transport industry to ensure public safety and restore discipline within the sector.
The Minister said that the government would not hesitate to prosecute offenders, stressing that protecting passengers must remain the top priority in the transport service.
Ratnayake also announced that seat‑belt use will soon become compulsory, not only on expressways but across all long‑distance bus routes nationwide.
He urged private bus owners and operators to prepare for these changes, noting that the government will allow a brief adjustment period, but the industry will be fully regulated moving forward.
The Minister further revealed that an extensive regulatory framework has already been drafted for a range of transport categories, including:School vans, Office transport vans, Hired vehicles, and Three‑wheelers.
“If you wish to be part of this industry, operate your business properly,” he added. “The industry will be standardised. Regulations for school vans, office vans, hired vehicles and three‑wheelers have already been prepared.”
