COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is grappling with one of its most devastating natural disasters in recent history.

According to the Disaster Management Centre’s latest situation report, 1,151,776 people from 316,366 families across all 25 districts have been affected by severe floods and landslides triggered by relentless rains.

The official death toll has climbed to 366, while 367 individuals remain missing. Rescue teams continue to battle treacherous conditions to reach stranded communities.

Colombo and Gampaha Districts are among the hardest hit, with over 437,000 people affected and 212 shelters operating. In Gampaha alone, 218,899 people are impacted, with 9 deaths and 2 missing persons reported.

Badulla and Nuwara Eliya have witnessed catastrophic landslides, claiming 71 lives in Badulla and 75 in Nuwara Eliya, while Kandy records the highest death toll at 88, with 150 people still missing.

In the North and East, Trincomalee shelters 15,086 displaced individuals, while Mannar reports nearly 80,000 affected. Ampara has recorded 8 deaths, and Monaragala 3 fatalities.

Across the island, 1,564 safety centers have been established, housing 218,526 people from 61,612 families.

The scale of destruction is staggering: submerged towns, collapsed roads, and broken communication lines.

Relief efforts are underway, with military and air support deployed to deliver food, water, and medical aid.
