COLOMBO (News 1st); Five individuals, including the Chairman of the Koralaipattu Pradeshiya Sabha were released on personal bail of Rs. 500,000 each after being produced before the Valachchenai Magistrate’s Court Tuesday (25) afternoon in connection with the removal of archaeological name boards in Batticaloa District.
The court also issued a directive to reinstall the dismantled boards at their original locations starting tomorrow (26), under the supervision of the Pradeshiya Sabha.
The suspects agreed to comply with the order during proceedings.
Police investigations began after complaints which reported that seven boards marking historically significant sites in Thihiliwatta Junction, Pallachchenai, Kondakavachchenai, and Saraveli had been removed and later found stored within the Pradeshiya Sabha premises.
One suspect was initially arrested, and four others—including the Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha—were produced in court today, after they surrendered to the court.
The Department of Archaeology informed the court that, given the agreement to reinstall the boards, there was no need to pursue further legal action.
However, the case has been postponed until December 15 for review.
