Investigations Underway into Removal of Archaeological Signboards in Batticaloa

COLOMBO (News 1st): Four police teams have launched investigations to arrest six suspects, including the Chairman of the Valachchenai Pradeshiya Sabha, in connection with the removal of archaeological signboards in the Batticaloa District.

Police said the suspects have fled the area.

Yesterday, a 53-year-old suspect was arrested in Kiran, Valachchenai, in relation to the incident. 

He is scheduled to be produced before the court today.

The investigation began following a complaint filed by the Archaeology Office in Kiran, Valachchenai.

According to the complaint, archaeological signboards installed in Thihiliwatta Junction, Pallachchenai, Kondukawachchenai, and Saraweli had been removed by the Valachchenai Pradeshiya Sabha.

Police further stated that the seven removed signboards were found yesterday within the premises of the Koralaipattu Pradeshiya Sabha in Valachchenai and have been taken into police custody.
