COLOMBO (News 1st); In a dramatic moment during his 2026 Budget presentation, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake responded sharply to opposition criticism, which likened his anti-corruption drive to authoritarianism. The President dismissed the comparison as absurd, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to enforce the law without fear or favor.

“The Proceeds of Crime Act has been passed, and a dedicated Police Unit headed by a Deputy Inspector General is now in place,” the President declared. “Yet some claim that ‘Hitler is back.’ They say Russia and America must unite to defeat Hitler. Did you see that? Are you Russia? Are you America?” he asked, turning to different factions of the Opposition.

Drawing on history, the President reminded lawmakers that the alliance between Russia and America to defeat Hitler was a turning point in global politics during a critical era. “To compare that to today’s politics is laughable. You need to understand world history in its proper context,” he said.

Rejecting accusations of authoritarianism, President Dissanayake made his stance clear:
“Bear in mind, we will enforce the law. No matter what interpretations are given, if someone has wronged the people—regardless of who they are, what position they hold, or what responsibility they carry—if they have committed fraud, corruption, or crimes, they will be punished. You can interpret it however you want. We will not back down.”
