COLOMBO (News 1st); Standing in the shadow of the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Egypt is unveiling the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) , a new cultural monument for the modern age.

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), now the world’s largest archaeological museum, houses more than 100,000 artefacts spanning 7,000 years of Egyptian history. Its centerpiece is the complete collection from Tutankhamun’s tomb—his gold mask, chariots, and throne—displayed together for the first time.

Costing $1.2 billion and covering 500,000 sq m, the vast complex near the Giza pyramids features monumental treasures including a 16 m obelisk and an 11 m statue of Ramesses II. Egyptologists say the museum’s opening strengthens calls for the return of key artefacts like the Rosetta Stone.

Decades in the making, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is expected to attract up to eight million visitors a year, marking a new era for Egyptian heritage and tourism.
