COLOMBO (News 1st); Attorney-at-Law Gunaratne Wanninayake appeared before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, accompanied by Sri Lanka Bar Association President Rajeev Amarasuriya.

Earlier today, Wanninayake filed a writ petition through his legal team at the Court of Appeal, seeking an order to prevent his arrest.

The petition claims that police are preparing to unlawfully detain him in connection with an investigation into an incident last Friday, where he allegedly obstructed a police officer’s duties on the premises of the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.

The petition was taken up before a bench comprising Court of Appeal President Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Priyantha Fernando.

During the hearing, Justice Abeysuriya noted that the court does not have the authority to issue directives on whether an individual should be arrested or not, after considering the submissions presented.

The case has been scheduled to be called again tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
