COLOMBO (News 1st); Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe has submitted a comprehensive report to the Presidential Secretariat analyzing the recent Supreme Court verdict related to the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster.

According to the Attorney General’s Department, the report was compiled following an in-depth review of the 361-page judgment issued by the Supreme Court.

In a related development, the Attorney General’s Department has formally requested a discussion with the President to deliberate on the court’s decision, particularly regarding the compensation order issued against the shipping company involved in the incident.

The Supreme Court has directed the company to pay one billion US dollars in damages within one year, in compensation for the extensive environmental damage caused by the vessel’s fire and subsequent sinking off the coast of Sri Lanka.

The Attorney General’s Department stated that several binding orders were issued as part of the judgment, and that the proposed discussion with the President will help align future actions and ensure coordinated implementation of the court’s directives.

Efforts are currently underway to assess the mechanisms for securing the full compensation amount, as outlined in the judgment.
