COLOMBO (News 1st); After a prolonged halt due to economic challenges, construction on the Kadawatha–Mirigama section of the Central Expressway resumed this morning, marking a significant step forward in Sri Lanka’s infrastructure development.

The resumption ceremony was held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, signaling renewed momentum and political commitment to completing one of the country’s most vital transport projects.

The 37-kilometer stretch between Kadawatha and Mirigama had been suspended in mid-2022, as the nation grappled with a severe economic crisis.

Today’s restart represents a turning point from reduced efficiency to full-speed progress, with construction now expected to be completed by 2028.

The event was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, Minister of Ports, Aviation, Transport and Highways Bimal Rathnayake, and several other dignitaries.

The Central Expressway is a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s national infrastructure strategy, aimed at reducing travel time, boosting regional connectivity, and stimulating economic growth.
