COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Provincial Councils are facing a significant staffing crisis, with 61,835 vacancies currently unfilled across various positions, according to Dr. Chandana Abeyratne, Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.
The Western Provincial Council has recorded the highest number of vacancies, totaling 16,651.
Minister Abeyratne confirmed that recruitment efforts are already in progress to fill these gaps.
He further revealed that 1,000 university graduates have already been recruited for island-wide services, with approval granted to hire another 1,000.
In a broader move to strengthen the public sector, the government has decided to recruit 35,000 graduates into state service.
