COLOMBO (News 1st): A senior Sri Lanka Army officer has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following his arrest over serious allegations of selling military-grade ammunition to an organized criminal figure.

The suspect, a 46-year-old Lieutenant Colonel from Galle, was taken into custody yesterday (11) by the Western Province (North) Crimes Division.

He had been serving as the commanding officer at the Palai Nagar Army Camp in Mallavi.

Investigations reveal that the officer allegedly sold over 250 rounds of T56 ammunition to a known organized criminal named "Commando Salintha." In return, a sum exceeding Rs. 650,000 was reportedly deposited into the officer’s personal bank account.

Further revelations indicate that Commando Salintha had previously served as an assistant to the arrested Lieutenant Colonel during his tenure in the Army.

The arrest was made based on information uncovered during interrogations of another detainee, identified as Walas Kata, who is currently in remand custody.
