COLOMBO (News 1st):During a media briefing, National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Namal Rajapaksa, called for an impartial and thorough investigation into the recent container-related incident. He emphasized that the SLPP had already suspended the party membership of those involved and questioned whether the containers were released in violation of the law or whether blame was being shifted between parties.

Addressing reports linking local councillors to the case, Rajapaksa noted that one MP had contested in 2018 and another in the last Pradeshiya Sabha election. He stressed that proper investigations would determine any involvement and insisted that the SLPP had no role in unlawful activities. “We are not liars. We have not interfered in illegal activities and will not,” he said, urging the government to conduct a fair probe.

On the matter of chemicals reportedly entering the country, Rajapaksa expressed concerns over discrepancies between the time of import and seizure, suggesting that container contents could have been tampered with over the nine months in question. He questioned the government and police’s handling of the situation and implied that organized elements may have been involved.

Rejecting the allegations directly, Rajapaksa declared, “I reject these allegations 1000 percent. We will not allow unfounded accusations against the Rajapakses.” He warned against using the situation to deflect responsibility from officials and reiterated that the SLPP would continue to demand accountability and the identification of the real perpetrators.
