President Approves Removal of IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon

COLOMBO (News 1st); President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has approved the proposal to remove Deshabandu Tennakoon from the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The Presidential Secretariat stated that the letter signed by the President has been forwarded to the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security.

It further noted that the Secretary is expected to hand over the letter to Deshabandu Tennakoon.

The proposal to remove Deshabandu Tennakoon from the IGP post was passed in Parliament yesterday (5) with a majority of 177 votes.

A total of 177 votes were cast in favor of the proposal.

No Member of Parliament voted against it.

MP Ramanathan Archuna abstained from voting.

The proposal to remove the IGP was submitted to the Speaker on March 25th, with the signatures of 115 MPs.

This was under the provisions of the Removal of Public Officers Procedure Act No. 5 of 2002.

The proposal included 27 allegations against the IGP, including abuse of power, corruption, serious dereliction of duty, and extreme political bias.

Under the provisions of the Act, a three-member committee appointed to investigate the allegations of misconduct found Deshabandu Tennakoon guilty of 19 charges.
