COLOMBO (News 1st); The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has announced the opening of tenders for 20 new temporary parking lots in and around the Colombo city area, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility.
According to the UDA, previous efforts to free up land for parking were met with various challenges. Following a comprehensive review, the Authority has now initiated a transparent tender process to allocate these spaces.
Some of the parking lots are already operational, while several new ones have recently been established.
The UDA stated that these additions are expected to significantly reduce vehicle congestion in central Colombo and its access routes.
In a long-term move to address the city’s chronic traffic issues, the government is planning to construct multi-storey parking complexes within Colombo.
Currently, over 400,000 vehicles enter Colombo daily, with 80% of them being private vehicles.
