COLOMBO (News 1st); The World Bank has approved an additional $50 million in financing for Sri Lanka’s General Education Modernization Project.

The project aims to benefit approximately 500,000 students and 150,000 teachers across the country.

The funding will support critical education reforms, enhance teaching quality, upgrade school infrastructure, and improve student well-being, with a strong emphasis on underserved schools, including those in plantation communities and those catering to children with special needs.

Schools in all nine provinces, regardless of grade level, are expected to benefit.

The financing will also modernize teacher education and professional development, with a focus on digital learning.

Additionally, it will strengthen school health and nutrition programs, improving access to clean water, sanitation, menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, and mental health support.

The project is being implemented by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Education in collaboration with Provincial Education Authorities.
