COLOMBO (News 1st) - A special operation has been launched to identify and take into custody minors found begging or selling goods in unsafe conditions.
The operation was jointly conducted by the Bureau for the Investigation of Abuse of Children & Women and the National Child Protection Authority.
the operation conducted across multiple police divisions including Colombo North, Colombo South, Colombo Central, Nugegoda, Gampaha, Panadura, Kelaniya, Negombo, Mount Lavinia, Kalutara, Tangalle, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Kurunegala, Chilaw, Ratnapura, Galle, and Matara.
As a result, 21 minors were taken into custody after being found engaged in begging and street vending under unsafe conditions.
Authorities confirmed that the children have since been placed in appropriate protective care.
