COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Railway Department says a special inspection of the signalling system on the coastal line from Colombo Fort to Kalutara, will be conducted today and tomorrow.
General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara confirmed that the Panadura to Moratuwa section has already been inspected and certified as safe by railway signalling officers.
The inspection follows a recent incident involving the Sagarika train, which was halted in Modara, Moratuwa, due to a broken rail track.
The line was temporarily closed following the incident.
Compounding the risk, another train from Panadura to Colombo Fort proceeded despite the earlier blockage, as the signal incorrectly displayed a green light.
A potential accident was narrowly avoided thanks to the quick action of the train driver.
