COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka and Italy are poised to take a significant step forward in their diplomatic relationship with the establishment of a formal political consultation mechanism, marking a new chapter in over seven decades of bilateral ties.
Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara, announced that both countries are now prepared to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to initiate structured political dialogue.
“Though our diplomatic ties span more than seventy years, until recently we lacked formal mechanisms for structured political dialogue,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy and hosting the inaugural round of consultations this September.”
The Minister also highlighted the broader scope of cooperation between the two nations, noting that several other MoUs are nearing finalization. He emphasized that economic collaboration remains a central pillar of the bilateral agenda, with Italy ranking among Sri Lanka’s top export destinations, a key source of tourism, and a growing investor.
“With economic stabilization and ongoing reforms in Sri Lanka, we are confident that more Italian companies will recognize the opportunities our country offers,” he said, pointing to sectors such as manufacturing, ICT, hospitality, agriculture, and infrastructure as areas ripe for investment.
Minister Nanayakkara also acknowledged the vital role of the Sri Lankan diaspora in Italy, praising their contributions to Italian society and their significant remittances, which continue to support Sri Lanka’s economy.
“With over 38,000 Italian tourists visiting Sri Lanka last year, we warmly invite even more to explore the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of our island,” he added.
