Railway Workers Not the Problem—It’s the Management

COLOMBO (News 1st); Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, stated that the ongoing issues within Sri Lanka’s railway system stem not from the majority of its workforce, but from administrative inefficiencies and poor management.

Speaking on the matter, Dr. Gunasena said, “When we look at the railway sector, it’s clear that not all professionals are disruptive. Only a small minority are involved in such actions, yet the entire workforce is unfairly labeled. Most station masters, drivers, and guards are deeply committed to improving the service and take great pride in their profession.”

He emphasized that the divide between the government and railway professionals lies in their roles—political leadership versus professional advocacy. “When professionals reach a point where they feel unheard, they resort to trade union action. Unfortunately, this affects the public, and we are firmly against that.”

Dr. Gunasena warned that if the current situation continues, a change in administration may be necessary. “There is a clear weakness and inefficiency in the current management. The problem lies not with the workers, but with the administration itself.”
