COLOMBO (News 1st): A laboratory for testing the quality standards of coal used for electricity generation in thermal power plants is set to be established in Sri Lanka.

The facility will be built within the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI).

This decision was reached during discussions between the Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena, and the Minister of Energy, Eng. Kumara Jayakody.

Coal quality and standards, as an imported natural resource, are crucial factors in thermal electricity generation.

Currently, Sri Lanka lacks a dedicated laboratory to conduct these quality tests for imported coal.

Instead, such tests are done through laboratories in foreign countries.

The establishment of the new laboratory will help reduce costs associated with these testing processes.
