COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Navy brought ashore an ill fisherman who was in critical condition aboard a local multiday fishing trawler, south of the island about 43 nautical miles (79km) off Galle. Upon being brought ashore, he was transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for medical attention today (06 Feb 25).
The multiday fishing trawler named ‘Sadue Putha 04’ with six crew members on board set off from the Wennappuwa fisheries harbour on 02 Jan for fishing. One of the crew members aboard had taken critically ill while aboard the trawler which was about 43 nautical miles (79km) off Galle. Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, located at the Navy Headquarters, about the situation and requested assistance.
Responding to the urgent situation, the Navy directed a Fast Attack Craft attached to the Southern Naval Command to the designated sea area to bring the patient ashore. Accordingly, the fisherman in critical condition was safely transferred to the Fast Attack Craft on the night of 05 Feb and he was brought to the Galle Harbour, while administering first aid. Once brought ashore, he was rushed to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital today (06 Feb 25).
