Former Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Wife Released on Bail

COLOMBO(News 1st) - Former minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, his wife, and 4 other suspects who were arrested in connection with a financial fraud, have been ordered to be released on bail.

That was after being produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela today.

The suspects were released on two surety bails of 2.5 million rupees each.

The suspects were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) last night.

The arrest was made in connection with allegations of misappropriating Rs. 6.1 million in 2014.

The Criminal Investigation Department has revealed that the Minister had used the amount of Rs. 6,146,110 received from the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation under the pretext of providing relief to people displaced by the floods in the Bingiriya and Narammala areas for election campaign activities in the 2015 Presidential Election.

Accordingly, on the advice of the Attorney General, the former minister was arrested under the Misuse of Public Funds and Public Property Act.
