COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation says that 15,000 metric tons of salt ordered from India will arrive in Sri Lanka next week.
General Manager of the Corporation, Chamila Iddamalgoda confirmed that permission has been granted to two importers to import salt from India to Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, 30,000 metric tons of salt is scheduled to be brought into Sri Lanka before the 31st of January.
This decision follows the impact of the last monsoon season on local salt production.
State Trading Corporation says rice will be imported based on future market requirements, while government has already imported 7,000 metric tons of rice.
A senior official also noted that paddy harvesting has already commenced.
Private importers have also brought in over 125,000 metric tons of rice under government authorization.
