Heavy Rainfall Expected in Several Provinces

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Meteorology has forecasted rain or thundershowers in the North Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central Provinces, as well as in the Hambantota District today. 

Certain areas in the Eastern Province, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Polonnaruwa Districts may experience heavy rainfall of approximately 50mm.

The forecast predicts rain or thundershowers in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, and in the Galle and Matara Districts during the evening or night. 

Additionally, strong winds are expected intermittently in the eastern slopes of the central hills and the North, East, North Central, North Western, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Hambantota District.

Flood Warnings and Updates:

Due to the prevailing heavy rainfall, the water level of the Malwathu Oya has risen, leading to minor flooding in the Thanthirimale area. 

The Department of Irrigation has advised residents of low-lying areas around the Malwathu Oya to remain vigilant. Flood warnings have also been issued for the Yan Oya in the Horowpothana area.

The sluice gates of the Kala Wewa reservoir have been opened further, releasing a water volume of 2017 cubic feet per second into the Kala Oya.

The Giritale reservoir in the Polonnaruwa District is currently discharging water due to the recent rainfall. 

Residents using the Minneriya Oya have been advised to exercise caution. 

Three sluice gates of the Minneriya reservoir have been opened, releasing 900 cubic feet of water per second into the Kawudulla reservoir.

The Nuwara Wewa has also started discharging water due to heavy rainfall, releasing water into the Malwathu Oya. The Department of Irrigation has requested residents along the banks of the Malwathu Oya to remain cautious.
