Investigations to Begin on Candidates Who Failed to Submit Election Expense Reports

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Police Media Spokesperson, Buddhika Manatunga says that investigations will be launched into candidates who failed to submit their income and expenditure reports for the parliamentary elections. 

This process will be carried out in consultation with the Assistant Election Commissioners of the respective provinces.

The Election Commission has reported 1,040 candidates to the police for failing to submit their expenditure reports for the parliamentary elections.

Among them are over 900 candidates, as well as several political parties and national list MPs.

The deadline for submitting these reports for the 2024 parliamentary elections ended at midnight on December 6. 

Chairman of the National Election Commission, R.M.A.L Rathnayake, said that any candidate prosecuted for failing to submit their reports will be disqualified from contesting in provincial council or local government elections.

Additionally, Police Media Spokesperson revealed that facts have been reported to court regarding 13 candidates from the presidential election, who also failed to submit their expense reports.
