COLOMBO (News 1st) -
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake addressed the importance of unity and inclusivity in his vision for the country's future, during his policy statement at the inaugural session of the 10th Parliament.
He emphasized that people from every province and ethnicity have come together to build this government. For a long time, the political structure in the country was fragmented, with political camps formed along provincial, religious, and ethnic lines. This division led to deeper mistrust and doubts among the people.
Dissanayake pointed out that when racism becomes part of a political party's agenda, it inevitably fosters racism among its opponents in response. This cycle of division harms the unity of the nation. However, he highlighted that people from all races and regions have placed their trust in the government and granted it the power to lead.
The President stressed the importance of adhering to multiparty principles and accepting the change of policies. He acknowledged that every citizen, whether they voted for the government or not, has a rightful place in the country. As the elected government, it is their responsibility to address the needs of all citizens, with full accountability.
He reaffirmed that while the people have fulfilled their role in electing the government, it is now the government's duty to honor that trust and fulfill its promises to the people.
