COLOMBO (News 1st) - Dr. Ashoka Ranwala has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of Sri Lanka's 10th Parliament.
The inaugural session of the new Parliament began on Thursday (21).
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya proposed Dr. Ranwala's name for the position, which was seconded by Cabinet Minister Vijitha Herath.
Dr. Mohamed Rizvie Salih was elected as Deputy Speaker, with his nomination proposed by Chief Government Whip and Cabinet Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, and seconded by Cabinet Minister Saroja Paulraj.
Hemali Weerasekara was appointed Deputy Chairperson of Committees, with her nomination proposed by Cabinet Minister Sunil Handunneththi and seconded by Samanmalee Gunasinghe.
Additionally, Speaker Dr. Ranwala announced that Sajith Premadasa has been appointed Leader of the Opposition.
