Colombo (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath speaking to reporters on Thursday (24) afternoon clarified that there was no specific information indicating the nature of the threat or the type of attack, that was aimed at foreign national in Sri Lanka.
However, he said there were concerns about attempts to create disturbances targeting gatherings of Israeli nationals. He emphasized that the information suggests local individuals were involved, not foreign nationals.
When asked if there were any foreign nationals among those arrested, Minister Herath confirmed that all the arrested individuals are locals.
He also addressed reports from mainstream media claiming that the information came from Indian intelligence and that two individuals were sent with a sum of 500,000 rupees.
Minister Herath categorically denied these reports, stating that they are completely false and that Indian intelligence did not provide such information. He urged the media to act responsibly and avoid spreading false information that could cause public panic.
Regarding the presence of explosives or weapons with the arrested individuals, Minister Herath confirmed that no such items were found. The individuals were arrested on suspicion.
Minister Herath also mentioned that investigations are ongoing to confirm whether an attack will take place.
He stressed the need for more time to verify the accuracy of the information. Additionally, he stated that there is no evidence to suggest that the arrested individuals are key members of any extremist organizations.
