Over 8,000 Candidates to Contest General Election

COLOMBO (News 1st): 
The Election Commission said that 8,352 candidates will contest the upcoming general election.

Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said that the Colombo district has the highest number of candidates, with 966 competing for seats.

A total of 50 groups are fielding candidates from Colombo, and nominations from 46 of these groups have been accepted, including 27 recognized political parties and 19 independent groups.

The Polonnaruwa district has the fewest candidates, with only 120, which includes 13 recognized political parties and 2 independent groups.
