Former State Intelligence Chief Apologizes to Supreme Court

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Chief of State Intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena apologized to the Supreme Court today (7) for failing to pay the compensation ordered in connection with the Easter Sunday terror attacks by the stipulated deadline.

Jayawardena appeared in person before the Supreme Court to offer his apology.

Meanwhile, Jayawardena has completed the payment of the remaining Rs. 65 million in compensation related to the Easter Sunday attacks. This was confirmed by President's Counsel Chandaka Jayasundara, who represented Jayawardena in court.

The Supreme Court had previously ordered Jayawardena to pay a total of Rs. 75 million in compensation for failing to act on prior intelligence regarding the Easter Sunday attacks. He had already paid Rs. 10 million, and with this final payment, the full amount has now been settled.

This was in relation to the fundamental rights applications filed with the supreme court over the failure to act on prior intelligence regarding the Easter Sunday attacks.

The petitions were heard today before a seven-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justices Murdu Fernando, S. Thurairaja, A.H.M.D. Nawaz, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, Shiran Gunaratne, and Achala Wengappuli.
