Attack on News 1st Journalists: Case Pushed to 2025

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The fundamental rights application filed on behalf of eight journalists of MTV Channel (Private) Limited over the assault carried out against them on 9th July 2022, was taken up before the Supreme Court on Wednesday (02).

Journalists Sarasi Peiris, Waruna Sampath, Janitha Mendis, T. Sinthujan, Imesh Sutherland, W. Weerakoon, V. Chandran, and Lahiru Madhusanka Arachchi have been named as Petitioners.

The matter was taken up before a bench comprising Supreme Court Justices S. Thurairaja PC, Kumuduni Wickremasinghe, and Achala Wengappuli.

The Senior State Counsel appearing on behalf of the Attorney General for the 1st to 4th, and 8th Respondents, informed the Court that the Inspector General of Police has ceased to hold office and that therefore the caption needed to be amended, and moved for the case to be refixed.
