COLOMBO (News 1st) – Switzerland has called for an investigation into evidence of arbitrary arrests, abuse, and torture during anti-drug operations conducted by the armed forces in Sri Lanka.

Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday, Switzerland urged that those responsible be prosecuted.

Swiss Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Jürg Lauber, expressed alarm over the adoption of repressive laws such as the Online Security Act and laws governing NGOs. He also noted with concern that the Prevention of Terrorism Act remains in force.

"We are concerned by the potential abuse of these laws to repress the rights to freedom of expression and association and call on the Sri Lankan authorities to adapt national legislation in accordance with its international obligations," Lauber stated.
