Arundika Becomes Independent MP In Parliament; Says Will Work Against 'Destructive' Group

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Arundika Fernando, declared his intention to become independent in Parliament today, stating his intention to distance himself from the current political alliances. 

The announcement was made during Tuesday's session, where Fernando emphasized the need for unity among democratic leaders to combat what he described as a "destructive group" threatening the country's stability.

Fernando, who also serves as the Minister of State for Urban Development and Housing, expressed deep concern over the current political trajectory. "If this is going to be taken to a disastrous place, Speaker, I think that if there are leaders who respect democracy here, this is the opportunity for all of them to come together," Fernando stated, urging leaders to unite against forces that he believes are working against the nation's best interests.

Reflecting on his efforts to support the current administration, Fernando recounted his role in the recent political campaign. "On September 1st, last month, I brought him [the President] to the center of Chilaw in the Puttalam district for the victory of the current president. But I have a little regret," he lamented, indicating his frustration with the lack of support from certain political factions.

Fernando went on to voice his suspicions about a potential "unholy alliance" working behind the scenes to destabilize the country. "I wonder if there is any other plan to bring the unholy power group to power. After losing, they struggle again to bring it to a destructive place, to set fire to houses, to set parliament on fire," he warned, painting a grim picture of the current political landscape.

Fernando made a clear declaration of his decision to become independent, stating, "From today, I will start negotiating with those who can defeat the destructive group of this country independently." He called for a united front, including the Leader of the Opposition and the President, to stand against what he termed the "unholy organization."

He described this faction as the group that has joined with the National People's Power.

Fernando reiterated his commitment to this cause, emphasizing his willingness to engage with any group or individual dedicated to preserving the nation's democratic integrity.
