COLOMBO (News 1st); Health Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala has highlighted a concerning rise in respiratory system-related diseases in Sri Lanka over recent years.
Speaking at ‘RESPIRE’ - the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health - Dr. Mahipala attributed this increase to factors such as rapid urbanization, air pollution, and climate change.
Dr. Mahipala also pointed out that a lack of scientific knowledge among the population, low education levels, and poverty contribute to the growing prevalence of respiratory diseases.
He emphasized the need for greater awareness and education to combat these health issues.
The meeting, which spans three days, has brought together respiratory health experts from around the world to Colombo.
The goal is to initiate various programs aimed at reducing the risk of respiratory diseases in the Asian region.
