COLOMBO (News1st); Minister of Health Dr. Ramesh Pathirana highlighted the significant increase in treatment costs due to road accidents. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the mental health clinic at Kegalle General Hospital, he stated that approximately 12,000 accident-related deaths occur annually in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Pathirana clarified that nearly 3,000 of these deaths are specifically attributed to road accidents. He emphasized the additional burden of disabilities sustained by a large number of accident survivors.

The Minister stressed the immense financial strain placed on the health sector by treating accident victims. He explained that the cost of treating fractures, including plates and sutures, is ten times higher compared to treating chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Dr. Pathirana concluded by urging the public to exercise caution and take preventive measures to reduce road accidents, which represent a substantial cost on the healthcare system.
