COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe reiterated his call for opposition parties to stand united in safeguarding the agreements forged with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He made this call during the UNP May Day Rally in Maligawatte.

Addressing the bustling crowd gathered at the UNP May Day Rally, Ranil Wickremesinghe reflected on the resilience of the United National Party (UNP) in the face of challenges, emphasizing its role in revitalizing the nation's economy.

"Some assumed the UNP was done, and over. Some called for the UNP to be buried. What we tried to do was breathe life into an economy that was to be buried," remarked Wickremesinghe, highlighting the party's commitment to economic rejuvenation.

Expressing satisfaction at the vibrant display of political diversity symbolized by the multitude of party cut-outs adorning Maradana junction, Wickremesinghe lauded the democratic ethos underpinning the May Day festivities.

"This is democracy," he affirmed, noting the proliferation of processions across Colombo as a testament to the country's democratic values.

Acknowledging criticisms of his government, Wickremesinghe asserted, "If they call it a dictatorship, then this is a good dictatorship."

He underscored the newfound freedom of expression that allowed for dissenting voices to be heard, contrasting it with the restrictive environment of years past.

In a plea for unity, Wickremesinghe implored opposition parties, particularly the SJB and JVP, to set aside differences and collaborate with the government to safeguard the nation's achievements.

"Are we to protect what we achieved, or head back to 2022?" he questioned, urging support for the government's efforts to fulfill International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions for the country's development.

Wickremesinghe announced plans to introduce legislation related to IMF conditions in parliament, soliciting bipartisan support for the initiative.

"I request the support of all for this, especially from the SJB and the JVP," he appealed.
